Last week Wednesday Dan & I both happened to be off work, so we got spontaneous and took a 2 hour drive up to Devils Lake State Park. As soon as we arrived we ate our lunch and then set out on a hike around the entire lake. We took our time, made a few wrong turns, and stopped to take photos so the hike ended up totaling about 4 hours. When we were just past halfway around the lake the trail abruptly began going up, so up we went! Stair after stair all the way to the top of the bluff. My legs and lungs started getting tired after a while, but the scenery that was waiting for us at the top made it so worth it. A close second to the beautiful views were inspirational sayings that were sporatically hung on trees throughout the entire trail. My favorite was this Mark Twain quote:
"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect."
At the end, our feet ached and we dozed off for a while on a blanket by the water and finished the trip with smores :)
A hike like this was on my 30 by 30 list so of course I'm happy to make that checkmark, but I'm even more happy that I had a day away from the computer and my fast-paced lifestyle. Not to mention, there isn't anyone else I would have rather spent such a peaceful day with ♥
